Robert Schumann Cello Concerto in A minor
Gustav Mahler Symphony No 5 in C sharp minor

Vassily Sinaisky, Rebecca Tong conductors
Yukyung Na cello

After its première in 1904, Mahler is reported to have said of his own Fifth Symphony: ‘Nobody understood it. I wish I could conduct the first performance 50 years after my death.’ The emotional scope of the work is indeed huge. In fact, Herbert von Karajan once said that when you hear the piece: ‘you forget that time has passed. A great performance of the Fifth is a transforming experience. The fantastic finale almost forces you to hold your breath.’

The programme is completed by Schumann’s introspective Cello Concerto, a quietly revolutionary piece and one of the three great Romantic works for the instrument.
