About
The Only King is acclaimed as the first original Cantonese biblical musical to present the story of the Book of 1 Samuel in its entirety. The production follows the life of King Saul, from his anointing and rise to the throne to his gradual downfall through pride and disobedience. Through the contrasting journeys of Saul and David, the musical explores themes of obedience, faith, repentance, and God’s grace, offering meaningful reflections for contemporary audiences.
First staged in 2005, The Only King enjoyed multiple sold-out performances in Hong Kong and is widely regarded as a landmark work in Chinese Christian musical theatre.
To mark the 20th anniversary of its premiere, The Only King was presented in London and Cambridge in January 2026, where it received enthusiastic responses and strong audience acclaim. Building on this success, the production will embark on a UK tour in September 2026, with performances at the RNCM Theatre in Manchester and the Old Rep Theatre in Birmingham.
