Melvin Tay
Melvin’s research explores re-realising opera through arrangements for chamber ensemble that would help facilitate performances by groups with logistical and/or financial constraints. Through this, he aims to promote quality access to opera for performers and audiences.
As a versatile young conductor, Melvin regularly works with local orchestras, opera societies, wind orchestras and brass bands. Ensembles include BBC Philharmonic, Northern Ballet Sinfonia, Northern Film Orchestra, and many more. He has acted as Assistant Conductor for various conductors such as Vasily Petrenko, Ludovic Morlot, and many others on projects with the BBC Philharmonic and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. He was awarded the Special Prize at the 2nd International Conducting Competition in Brescia. He is currently the music director of Opera Viva.
