Dr Hongshuo Fan | New RNCM PRiSM Research Software Engineer Appointed

RNCM PRiSM is joined by Dr Hongshuo Fan as the Centre’s new Research Software Engineer in April 2023

We are delighted to welcome Dr Hongshuo Fan to the PRiSM team as our new Research Software Engineer.

Hongshuo is a Chinese cross-disciplinary composer, new media artist, and creative programmer. His work often involves real-time, interactive multimedia content.

With a PhD in Electroacoustic Composition from the University of Manchester, his research and creative practice fuses traditional culture with cutting-edge technology.

Following on from his doctoral research concerning interactive multimedia performance systems in the IoT (the Internet of Things) era, Hongshuo previously worked as Research Assistant at the NOVARS Research Centre (the University of Manchester), as well as the Department of Computing at Goldsmiths, University of London. Past projects include Noh•Virtual (2022) – for Beatboxer and Digital Twin; Hybrid Live (2021-22) – for ultra-long distance networking collaboration performance; as well as Resourceful.World (2022-23) – exploring video games as a transformative medium to engage the public in sustainability research.

Since 2020, Hongshuo has been one of the core members of the Machine Learning for Music (ML4M) working group led by Professor Ricardo Climent (NOVARS Centre, University of Manchester) & Dr Sam Salem (RNCM PRiSM Senior Lecturer in Composition).

Many of his recent creative works, such as Metamorphosis (2021) and Conversation in the Cloud (2020-21), have been featured in the ML4M’s UNSUPERVISED series as well as PRiSM’s annual Future Music Festival.

As the new RNCM PRiSM Research Software Engineer, Hongshuo will continue the legacy of Dr Christopher Melen, working closely with the PRiSM team as well as engaging in creative collaborations with our doctoral & post-doctoral researchers, artists in residence & other external partners.

We are excited to have Hongshuo on board, and to explore new avenues in music and art, leveraging machine learning and AI to create innovative and cutting-edge works alongside him.

Hongshuo’s Biography

Hongshuo Fan (范弘硕) is a cross-disciplinary composer, new media artist, and creative programmer from China, with a PhD in Electroacoustic Composition from the University of Manchester. He has significant experience in producing real-time interactive multimedia content such as live electronics, acoustic instruments, light, generative visuals, and body movements.

Hongshuo’s passion for merging traditional culture and cutting-edge technology within contemporary art is reflected in his diverse portfolio, which comprises chamber music, audio-visual pieces, installations, and live interactive electronics. Moreover, his works have been showcased and featured at various esteemed international conferences and festivals, where they have garnered critical acclaim for their innovation and excellence.

Notably, his outstanding work HandwritingWuXing was conferred the coveted “Giga-Hertz 2019” prize in the production category by the ZKM – Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie in Karlsruhe, Germany. Additionally, his composition Extrema was the recipient of the 2016 International Computer Music Association Regional Asian Award for best composition.
