RNCM Engage Cumbria
RNCM Engage Cumbria is a five‑year programme designed to expand access to high‑quality music education for under‑18s across West Cumbria.
It provides world‑class tuition, tailored support for young people, and professional development opportunities for teachers.
Made possible by a transformational philanthropic gift from the Benny Walker Charitable Trust, this investment (2023–2028) has enabled extensive collaboration between the RNCM and local partners including Cumbria Music Hub, schools, and community organisations. Together, we are enriching musical opportunities for young people and building a lasting cultural legacy for the region.
Responding directly to the needs of local communities, RNCM Engage West Cumbria aims to ensure that every young person can explore and enjoy music, regardless of background or circumstance.

Structure
Following extensive consultation with local music leaders, schools, and community groups, the programme is structured around three core pillars:
First Access and Attainment: Creating initial opportunities for children and young people to experience music.
Progression Routes: Supporting learners as they advance to the next stage of their musical journey.
Workforce Development: Strengthening the region’s network of skilled music educators.

Outcomes
Over the first two years of delivery (starting in 2023):
- 3,441 children and young people participated in musical activities;
- 31 schools and groups engaged in workshops and programmes;
- 5 youth and community bands took part in workshops and performances;
- 36 RNCM students supported delivery in schools and communities;
- 80 instrumental lessons were provided to children who may not otherwise have had access; and
- 4 Cumbrian music teachers began the RNCM Master of Education (MEd), with four more starting in September 2026.
