RNCM James Mottram International Piano Competition Underway

The third RNCM James Mottram International Piano Competition (JMIPC) is now well underway, with Round 1 of the Junior Category taking place this morning and Round 1 of the Senior Category poised for tomorrow.

Now in its third year, the competition has been made possible by a bequest from the late James Mottram with a specific instruction ‘to encourage and reward skill in performing at the keyboard the music of Domenico Scarlatti, Chopin and Debussy’.  It is open to competitors from around the world and is judged by an international panel of eight world-renowned pianists and tutors. This year’s jury includes Pascal Devoyon, Peter Frankl, Gabriel Kwok, Pascal Roge, Ilana Vered, Ory Shihor, Ying Wu and Graham Scott, RNCM Head of School of Keyboard Studies.

Both categories compete in two Rounds, culminating in a Concerto Final with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (RLPO). First prize in the Senior category (aged 19-25) includes £10,000 together with engagements and a management contract. A performance with the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and £4000 will be awarded to the winner of the Junior category (Under 19).

Once again the competition has the support of the RLPO which will accompany the finalists, and media partner Classic FM, which will record the competition final, to be broadcast on Monday 10 December at 8pm in the Full Works Concert with Jane Jones. The JMIPC has also recently been admitted into the World Federation of International Music Competitions.
