An international team of researchers, including RNCM alumna Dr Raluca Matei and several members of RNCM staff, has published a new open-access position paper that advocates for a more holistic and institution-wide approach to health promotion in tertiary music education.

Published in Arts Education Policy Review, Health Promotion in Tertiary Music Institutions: A Position Paper brings together the expertise of 122 researchers and practitioners from across the world to outline a framework for embedding health promotion within the culture, strategy and everyday practice of institutions that provide tertiary music education.

Grounded in research evidence and enriched by the lived experience of all of its contributing scholars, the publication highlights several examples of good practice from the RNCM, including initiatives led through the Student Health and Wellbeing Hub, PRiSM (The RNCM Centre for Practice & Research in Science & Music), and RNCM Innovate. It also showcases opportunities that the RNCM offers for students to engage in work-based learning and creative experimentation, recognising the importance of preparing musicians for sustainable and fulfilling careers.

The project was coordinated by Dr Raluca Matei, who is currently a Researcher in Health and Wellbeing at The King’s Foundation. RNCM colleagues Professor Jane Ginsborg (Emerita Professor of Music Psychology), Professor John Habron-James (Head of Music, Health and Wellbeing), and Dr Keith Phillips (Lecturer in Music) contributed to the paper, along with RNCM alumnae Dr Naomi Norton and Dr Akiho Suzuki.

The publication represents an important contribution to ongoing international conversations around musicians’ health and wellbeing, reinforcing the RNCM’s long-standing commitment to supporting the development of healthy, creative and sustainable musical careers.
