Tracey was born in Stirling and studied at the RNCM, where she graduated with BMus(hons), a Professional Performers Diploma and a postgraduate diploma. During her time at college, she was awarded a scholarship in each year of her studies along with numerous awards, including the Goronwy Evans Memorial Prize, the Cecil Kidd prize for trumpet and the Harry Mortimer Award.

As a soloist Tracey has performed recitals with both piano and organ and has given concerto performances with Manchester Camerata, the London Mozart Players, the Royal Scottish National orchestra and Camerata Scotland. She is principal trumpet with Manchester Camerata and also leads a busy freelance career playing with orchestras such as the Hallé, BBC Philharmonic, Opera North, Northern Chamber orchestra and Psappha. Tracey is also a member of the Hallé Brass Quintet, and is a trumpet tutor at the RNCM, Chetham’s School of Music and the Junior RNCM.
