Amelia Clarkson awarded Mendelssohn Scholarship

Congratulations to composer Amelia Clarkson, who’s been awarded the prestigious Mendelssohn Scholarship to support her PhD at the RNCM.

Founded in 1856 to commemorate composer Felix Mendelssohn, the £7000 grant is awarded to a composer under the age of 30 from the UK or Republic of Ireland who is undertaking advanced study. 

Amelia, who is supervised by Laura Bowler and Gary Carpenter, is currently in the second year of her PhD, which focusses on composing new music for dance which aims to challenge audience perceptions of sexual consent.

She said: ‘I am really delighted to receive the Mendelssohn Scholarship for my PhD at the RNCM. This support will provide me the stability to focus fully on my compositional practice and research. I am really grateful for this opportunity, especially in today’s challenging climate for artists. It is a privilege to follow so many brilliant composers.’

Previous recipients of the Mendelssohn Scholarship include RNCM Composition Tutor Steven Daverson.
