About

Part of RNCM International Brass Band Festival.

Tredegar Town Band begins its performance with A Spark Forgotten, a work of driving energy and pulsating rhythm by 17-year-old composer and cornet player Tasmin Crook, who hails from Penrith in Cumbria. Bursting with youthful spirit and striking confidence, this piece sets a thrilling tone for the evening. The momentum continues as euphonium virtuoso Glenn Van Looy takes the spotlight in Derek Bourgeois’s Euphonium Concerto, a tour de force demanding remarkable agility, endurance, and expressive range.

The world premiere of Phil Lawrence’s Mellisande follows and is a poignant addition to the programme following the composer’s unexpected passing in June 2025.

Finally, the evening concludes with a work by the festival’s featured composer, Philip Sparke. Commissioned by the New Zealand Brass Band Association in 1979, the piece takes its title from the Polynesian name for New Zealand, Aotearoa, meaning ‘land of the long white cloud’ – an image inspired by the first sighting of the islands by their early settlers.
