Music by RNCM composer Raymond Yiu published by Schott Music
Music by RNCM Professor of Composition Raymond Yiu is now available from Schott Music, marking an exciting new chapter for the award‑winning composer.
Described as ‘an outstanding and distinctive voice in British music’, Raymond’s works are regularly performed and broadcast worldwide by leading international artists. Born in Hong Kong and moving to the UK in 1990, Ryamond was self‑taught as a composer until 2009, when he began a DMus with Julian Anderson at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Since then, he has been commissioned by and written for organisations including the BBC Proms, Manchester International Festival, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Symphony, BBC Singers, Aldeburgh Festival, and London Sinfonietta, among many others.
Highlights of his career include performances of his Violin Concerto, written for Esther Yoo and premiered with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, and the Seattle Symphony; The World Was Once All Miracle for baritone and orchestra, commissioned by the International Anthony Burgess Foundation for Manchester International Festival and later shortlisted for the Royal Philharmonic Society Awards; and Northwest Wind, which won a British Composer Award. In 2021, Delphian released a critically acclaimed portrait album of his orchestral works.
Raymond’s music is often coloured by jazz influences and traditional Asian soundworlds – sometimes subtly, sometimes prominently – yet always with masterful orchestration and a deep sensitivity to the performers he writes for. Storytelling is a central thread throughout his output, with his understanding of specific social and cultural contexts enabling him to convey profound ideas in compelling and often unexpected ways. He has also written numerous successful graded exam pieces for ABRSM, bringing his music to students around the world.
Raymond joined the RNCM School of Composition in 2024.
