About

The School of Wind, Brass and Percussion takes centre stage in a spirited programme showcasing a wide range of styles, techniques, and musical colours.

Established in the 1990s by brass innovator Howard Snell, the RNCM Brass Band remains one of the College’s flagship ensembles and is ideally located in the heart of the UK’s brass band tradition. The RNCM supports its students with distinguished staff including Dr David Thornton, Director of Brass Bands, and hosts the annual RNCM International Brass Band Festival.

The RNCM Wind Orchestra boasts a legacy of firsts, becoming the first conservatoire wind orchestra to perform at the BBC Proms (1991) and the first ensemble at the College to give a webcast (2002). The group is joined by renowned British clarinettist Julian Bliss for John Mackey’s Divine Mischief, commissioned by the soloist himself. Inspired by a story outline written by the composer’s wife, the concerto unfolds like a ballet score, with the clarinet cast as the mischievous trickster.
