About

Where does music education sit within the real world of gigs, radio, and industry work?

This panel brings together artists and industry professionals working across Manchester’s grassroots scene and beyond. It opens up conversations around how careers begin and build, and the wider context that supports that journey alongside formal study.

Rather than focusing only on what happens within the classroom, this session looks at the broader activity that happens alongside classroom learning. In particular, it explores the networks, spaces, opportunities, and experiences that shape how people find their way into music.

Featuring

RNCM Alumni: independent artists building momentum through releases and live performance
Deb Grant BBC6Music: broadcaster championing new music and emerging artists
David Agnew Soundroots: working across grassroots venues, funding, development and touring

Hosted by Damian Morgan

The session will explore how the Manchester scene operates, where early momentum comes from, and how education, industry and grassroots activity intersect in practice.

What to expect

  • Insight into how artists and professionals navigate the industry
  • A broader understanding of the grassroots ecosystem
  • Different perspectives on building a sustainable music career

This event is open to prospective students, current students, and anyone interested in how music scenes and careers develop.
