RNCM Young Basses
RNCM Young Basses is a series of free workshops on playing the double bass. It is a chance to meet other bassists and get expert tuition and advice on a range of topics.
Young Basses is a series of six workshops on playing the double bass, free to anyone of school age. Sessions will be hosted by Geth Griffith, Rachel Meerloo and Ria Nolan.
At each workshop there will be sessions on jazz, orchestral, solo and chamber playing. Each workshop runs from 10am – 1pm.

Geth Griffith has an eclectic taste in music which has led to work with the Hallé, James Morrison, Ant & Dec, the Andy Prior Big Band, Opera North, Matt Cardle, Kevin Spacey, Royal Northern Sinfonia, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the American Four Tops, Katherine Jenkins, Clare Richards (Steps) and Anthony Costa (Blue). Geth teaches at the RNCM, Junior RNCM, Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts and previously the University of York.
Rachel Meerloo is currently a member of the Hallé and Double Bass Tutor at RNCM Young Strings. She freelanced and trialled for orchestral positions with many of the UK’s most prestigious orchestras before joining the Hallé in February 2011. As a chamber musician Rachel regularly performs and records with ensembles such as the Kreutzer Quartet and Longbow Ensemble. Other performing highlights include playing with Muse and recording several tracks with Elbow. Orchestral coaching credits include Hallé Youth Orchestra and NYO Inspire.
Ria Nolan is a passionate orchestral player and has performed professionally with orchestras including Manchester Camerata, Sinfonia Cymru and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. During her time at the RNCM, Ria was principal double bass of many RNCM ensembles and enjoyed participating in projects conducted by Sir Mark Elder, Jac Van Steen and Krzysztof Penderecki. She has also travelled to Italy with the RNCM Symphony Orchestra to participate in the Cantiere Internazionale d’Arte, Montepulciano, on several occasions. Ria teaches at Stockport Grammar School.
