Elgar Howarth: 1935 – 2025
We were deeply saddened to hear of the death of Elgar Howarth, one of the most significant figures to be associated with the 20th century brass band movement.
Elgar was a hugely influential figure in British classical music, both as a player and conductor, and during his career held various prestigious positions and tenures. His work in contemporary opera in particular, earned him critical acclaim, and he appeared regularly with all the leading British orchestras both in the concert hall and in the recording studio.
Elgar studied music at Manchester University and the Royal Manchester College of Music (now RNCM), where he focused on composition and trumpet. He was a founding member of New Music Manchester with fellow alumni Harrison Birtwistle, Peter Maxwell Davies, Alexander Goehr and John Ogdon.
A member of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, he later went on to enjoy a celebrated association with Grimethorpe Colliery Band. His influence on the wider brass band movement was profound, his pivotal compositions for the contest and concert stage reaching out in exciting new directions.
Elgar was a passionate educator, and his ability to inspire players of any age and level stood out and helped shape the musical landscape of the UK and beyond.
We send our heartfelt condolences to Elgar’s family and friends.
