Frankie Stevens co-edits first anthology dedicated to feminist metal studies

RNCM doctoral researcher Francesca (Frankie) Stevens will celebrate the publication of Women and Femme Voices in Metal Music, Culture, and Scholarship: Feminist Strategies of Resistance (Routledge, 2026) this summer, with a free online launch event bringing together international scholars and practitioners working across music, gender and cultural studies.

Jointly edited by Frankie Stevens and Jasmine Hazel Shadrack (Western University, Canada, and MK College, UK), the new publication is the first edited anthology dedicated entirely to feminist metal studies. The interdisciplinary collection marks a significant contribution to a growing field of research that adopts an intersectional feminist approach to explore experiences of gender, labour, creativity, trauma, queerness and community across diverse metal scenes. Contributors seek to address longstanding gaps in both scholarship and music culture by centring voices that have often been overlooked within a traditionally male-dominated field.

The online launch event will feature presentations from contributors working across Europe and the Americas, while speaking to members of the global metal community, as well as a wider audiences interested in current and future directions in feminist approaches to music and culture.
