John Wallace CBE: 1949 – 2026

The RNCM was saddened to hear of the passing of John Wallace CBE, former Principal of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, who died on 11 January 2026 at the age of 76.

A distinguished trumpet soloist, educator, and arts leader, John made a profound contribution to music education and performance throughout the UK, something which the College was proud to acknowledge in 2008 by awarding him Fellowship of the RNCM.

Professor Linda Merrick CBE, RNCM Principal, said: ‘John was a visionary leader in the conservatoire sector, as well as a generous and influential champion of music and the performing arts. It was a privilege to work alongside him for so many years and to honour his achievements with the award of an RNCM Fellowship. Our thoughts remain with his family, friends, and the many students and colleagues he inspired.’
