Philip Jones International Brass Ensemble Competition

The inaugural Philip Jones International Brass Ensemble Competition will take place at the RNCM between 15 and 20 July 2019.

Presented in partnership with the Royal Philharmonic Society and building on the legacy of Philip Jones CBE (1928 – 2000), the competition is open to brass quintets (two trumpets, one horn, trombone and tuba) with players aged between 16 and 30.

It aims to showcase excellence and enterprise in chamber music performance and offers three prizes: The Philip Jones Prize (£10,000), The Marah Mahlowe Prize (7,500) and The Founder’s Prize (£5,000). Members of the international jury include Reinhold Friedrich (trumpet), Barbara Butler (trumpet), Frøydis Ree Wekre (horn), Ian Bousfield (trombone) and Oren Marshall (tuba).

Applications are open from 1 July 2018 until 31 October 2018. Selection will be from submitted video-recordings, based on the criteria of musical qualities, enterprise and presentation. These will be judged by former members of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble.

This will be the first major competition of its kind held in the UK, with plans to hold future ones (with different ensemble formations) every three years. Full details are available here.
