Professor Nicholas Reyland featured in MSMI 20th-anniversary special issue

Professor Nicholas Reyland’s article, Corporate classicism and the metaphysical style: Affects, effects, and contexts of two recent trends in screen scoring, has been recognised as one of the most cited and viewed contributions in the 20-year history of Music, Sound, and the Moving Image (MSMI).

Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of MSMI

The article has been included in the journal’s 20th-anniversary virtual issue, which highlights influential research published since its launch.

The recognition comes ahead of Sound on Screen V and Re/sounding Visions: Music, Sound, and the Moving Image at 20, an international conference and symposium hosted by the RNCM from 15–17 July 2026. Bringing together researchers and practitioners from around the world, the event marks the journal’s twentieth anniversary and will explore current and emerging directions in the study of music, sound and audiovisual media.

The programme includes a keynote address by Professor Kathryn Kalinak, a roundtable on the development of sound-on-screen studies, and more than 70 presentations covering topics such as music video, streaming media, archival research, sonic branding, AI and music, videographic criticism, and global screen cultures.

As host institution, the RNCM will welcome an international community of scholars to reflect on the development of the field and consider its future directions.
