RNCM researcher Hans-Martin Buff secures second Grammy nomination
Congratulations to postgraduate researcher Hans-Martin Buff, on his Grammy nomination for Best Immersive Audio Album for his work on Tearjerkers.
The news marks the second time Hans-Martin has been nominated in this category, the first coming in 2024 when he picked up the award for Peter Gabriel’s i/o (In-Side Mix).

A recording engineer and music producer, Hans-Martin began his career at Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, USA, where he assisted on major projects including Live’s multi-platinum album Throwing Copper.
He went on to work across several leading Minnesota studios before securing a permanent role at Prince’s Paisley Park Studios. As Prince’s personal engineer for four years, Hans-Martin was responsible for the artist’s own recordings as well as several high-profile collaborations with acts such as No Doubt, Chaka Khan, and Larry Graham.
In 2001, Hans-Martin returned to his native Germany, where he has since recorded, mixed, and produced for an impressive roster of international talent, including Mousse T., Joss Stone, Zucchero, Eric Burdon, Roachford, Maxi Priest, and the Scorpions.
Since 2018, he has focused on the development of 3D audio, particularly for headphone listening, and is now regarded as an industry leader in immersive sound. He works closely with msm-studios in Munich and Berlin, as well as Real World Studios in Box, England, where he recently created Dolby Atmos mixes for Peter Gabriel’s latest releases. His research explores how musicians and producers transition from stereo to immersive formats within the recording studio environment.
