Portuguese flautist Frederico Paixão is Principal Flute of the Scottish Ballet Orchestra and a regular guest tutor at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Living between Glasgow and London, he appears as guest principal flute with many of the UK’s leading orchestras, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Hallé. In a 5* review of Mahler’s 9th Symphony with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Sir Donald Runnicles, The Herald singled out Frederico’s “sparkling guest contribution.”

He has played principal flute in many recordings, including Ein Heldenleben with the Philharmonia under Santtu-Matias Rouvali, and Joe Hisaishi’s Harp Concerto with Emmanuel Ceysson (recorded for Deutsche Grammophon at Suntory Hall in Tokyo with the RPO). He can also be heard on the alto flute in Brian Elias’ The Judas Tree with John Wilson’s Sinfonia of London, as well as Quiet City with Alison Balsom and the Britten Sinfonia.

Frederico started his studies at the Academia de Música de Santa Cecília in Lisbon, learning the flute with Paulo Martins and Ricardo Alves. In 2013, he moved to London to study at The Purcell School with Anna Pope. He was then awarded a full scholarship to study with Samuel Coles at the Royal Academy of Music, where he won the Flute Prize and was made a Chamber Music Fellow. Frederico’s other teachers at the Academy included Katherine Baker, Karen Jones, Helen Keen, Patricia Morris, Keith Bragg, and Lisa Beznosiuk on traverso. He also studied privately with Gitte Marcusson, Nuno Inácio, and Robert Winn.

Recent performing highlights include a recital for Portuguese Radio Antena 2 with his partner Mark Rogers, Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 with the Royal Northern Sinfonia and David Fray, and a sold-out O2 Arena with Diana Ross.

Frederico is thrilled to be joining the Royal Northern College of Music as Professor of Flute.
