Gareth Twigg has been Principal Contrabassoon of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra since 2009.
During the tenures of Chief Conductors Vasily Petrenko and Domingo Hindoyan, he has contributed to many notable projects, including the RLPO’s complete recording of the Shostakovich symphonies for Naxos, and performing the solo contrabassoon part in Never Smile at a Crocodile.
Alongside his orchestral role, Gareth enjoys a busy freelance career, appearing as Guest Principal Bassoon and Contrabassoon with many of the UK’s leading orchestras and ensembles, including the London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, Hallé, and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House.
A graduate of the RNCM, Gareth completed his studies in 2001, graduating with First Class Honours and two Professional Performance Diplomas (PPRNCM). He subsequently undertook postgraduate studies at the Royal College of Music with Andrea de Flammineis and Martin Field, graduating with distinction in both Solo and Orchestral Performance. On completing his studies, he was awarded the Worshipful Company of Musicians’ Silver Medal.
An accomplished bassoonist, contrabassoonist and occasional heckelphone player, Gareth also teaches Bassoon and Contrabassoon at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Based on the Wirral, he spends his time away from performing making reeds, playing chamber music and running the trails that weave across the peninsula.
