Paul Nilon is an RNCM Principal Study Tutor within the School of Vocal Studies and Opera and is long regarded as one of the outstanding artists of his generation in a wide and varied repertoire from Monteverdi to Britten and Jonathan Dove.
Paul has worked with the LPO, the OAE, the Northern Sinfonia, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, BBC Philharmonic,the Hallé,Manchester Camerata,The Sixteen and Ensemble Orchestral de Paris,the Philharmonia,LSO,Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra,Birmingham Symphony Orchestra under Andrew Davies,Sir Mark Elder,Ed Gardiner,Mark Wigglesworth,Daniele Gatti,Donald Runnicles,Ivor Bolton,Harry Bickett, Rolando Alessandrini
Paul has worked for most of the major British opera companies. Companies abroad include the Bayerische Staatsoper, Netherlands Opera, San Francisco Opera and Dallas Opera,Rome Opera,Deutsche Oper,Berlin,Lithuanian Nation Opera,Gothenburg Opera.
He is regarded as one of the finest singing actors and established long working relationships with the finest Opera directors including Sir Graham Vick,David and Christopher Alden,Tim Albery,David Poutney,David McVicar,Katie Mitchell,Mathew Warchus.
Career highlights include a long association with Opera North where he did 34 productions over 37 years including the title roles in Idomeneo,La Clemenza di Tito,Monteverdi’s Orfeo,Werther as well as Micha in Martinu’s Julietta both at Opera North,the National Theatre,Prague and the Ravenna festival.
At ENO Idomeneo,Tito,Tamino,Almaviva.
At WNO Tom Rakewell,Benedict,Ulisse and Nerone.
Internationally,Lurcanio-Ariodante and Grimoaldo for the Bayerische Staats Oper,San Francisco Opera and Dallas Opera.
Monteverdi’s Ulisse for the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino,the Nethlands Opera,the Grange Festival and the Birmingham opera Company.
Idomeneo for the Gothenburg Opera and Lithuanian National Opera,Buxton Festival and the Birmingham Opera Company.
Aschenbach for the Deutsche Oper,Berlin and the Garsington Festival.
He has taught for 30 years both privately,at the Leeds Conservatoire and now,at his Alma mater,the RNCM where he was a student of Frederic R.Cox.
