About
Part of RNCM International Brass Band Festival.
Fresh off the back of its recent triumph at the prestigious 171st British Open Brass Band Championships, Brighouse & Rastrick Band sets off with Peter Meechan’s B of the Bang, a double reference to sprinter Linford Christie’s famous race tactic and the now dismantled prominent sculpture here in Manchester of the same name.
Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen’s second Euphonium Concerto with soloist and RNCM alumnus Chris Robertson is followed by George Lloyd’s sombre but beautifully expressive tribute to the bandsmen killed by the 1982 Regent’s Park bombing.
The band will premiere two new works: Ondinas by RNCM student Helen Zyskowssa and Dorothy Gates’ Concerto for Tuba & Brass Band with soloist Les Neish. A piece by the festival’s featured composer concludes this programme, Philip Sparke’s Music of the Spheres, which reflects Sparke’s fascination with the origins of the universe and deep space.
