Name: Alpesh Chauhan OBE

Role: Alumnus and Music Director, Birmingham Opera Company

About: Birmingham-born Alpesh joined us as an undergraduate cellist, before continuing his studies as a postgraduate conductor. Since graduating in 2014, his conducting career has gone from strength to strength. After working as Assistant Conductor with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, he became Music Director of the Birmingham Opera Company, a position he holds alongside roles with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (Associate Conductor), and the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker (Principal Guest Conductor of the). Earlier this year we were so proud when Alpesh’s service to the arts was recognised in the form of an OBE in the late Queen’s New Year’s Honours list, and to see him conduct the CBSO at the opening of the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Did you know? With BBC Music and the National Youth Orchestra, Alpesh has been involved in the Ten Pieces project which has engaged more than half of UK primary schools and seeks to open up the world of classical music to children.
