Name: Robert (Robbie) Gardiner

Role: Programme Lead – Music Education (PGCE)

About: Joining in 2005 as an undergraduate clarinettist studying with Nicholas Cox, John Bradbury, Antonio Salguero, Linzi Marsh and our current Principal, Linda Merrick, Robbie became one of the first students to enrol on the newly expanded PGCE in Music with Specialist Instrumental Teaching course. After completing a Master’s at the Zurich Hochschule der Künste, he returned to Manchester to work as a music teacher and clarinettist before joining the College in 2017 as Assistant Head of Music Education., leading our PGCE programme in collaboration with Manchester Metropolitan University and developing its unique offer of outstanding tuition in specific instrumental pedagogies. He now leads music education work at the RNCM more broadly, helping to develop educational provision and research across the college, and working closely alongside partners and practitioners throughout the North West, including the regions music hubs.

Did you know? As well as working as a music educator and programme leader, Robbie conducts research into with the ways music education can function as a means of expression and the socio-political challenges around this.
