Royal Marines Band Service

Our Professional Experience Scheme with the Royal Marines Bands Service provides conductors and students from the School of Wind, Brass and Percussion the opportunity to explore a career in military music.

Royal Marines Bands have existed since 1767, with the modern Royal Marines Band Service (RMBS) being founded in 1903 to provide Bands for the Royal Navy.

Today all Royal Marines Bands are required to provide every imaginable musical ensemble including orchestras and dance bands. As a result, Royal Marines musicians are regarded as some of the most versatile in the military musical world.

With five bands situated across the UK, and a dedicated School of Music in Portsmouth, their commitment to continuous professional development allows musicians to develop their skills and further their career as an instrumentalist, conductor or both!

Royal Marines Bands continue to fly the flag internationally, delivering Defence Engagement for HM Government and the Royal Navy worldwide.

Over the last 15 years, 11 RMB Directors of Music have studied for a Master’s degree in conducting with us. This reciprocal arrangement has led to opportunities for other conducting students to visit one of their bands for conducting workshops.

In 2022 this partnership was extended to include wind, brass and percussion students. Six wind and brass students and four conductors spent three days rehearsing with Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Scotland, followed by a concert at the RNCM.
