RNCM MIUAWGA Ensemble / Fri 27 Mar
RNCM’s innovative Make-it-up-as-we-go-along (MIUAWGA) Ensemble delves into the collective intentions and imaginations of RNCM composers and performers, creating music entirely in the moment.
Under the direction of Head of Jazz and Improvisation Steve Berry, the ensemble is encouraged to explore and to use instinct to find the exquisite balance between the planned and the spontaneous. Dubbed ‘comprovisation‘, this particular performance challenges listeners to discern the boundaries between what’s on the page and what’s in the moment.
With no two performances ever the same, you’ll never hear anything like it again – literally.
Programme
Steve Berry A Clock Dreaming Of Holidays
A numerically devised ‘mechanistic’ tutti section has everyone improvising to a set rhythmic template. This is punctuated with wholly improvised interludes.
Luca Mellor Elephant Factory
Aidan Bryson Passing Through
James Ivackovic Wheel Of Fortune
Developed from the Tarot card
Thomasine O’Sullivan The Ritual
This is not a piece that is being performed for an audience; it is a Ritual that is being passed between us – as we each offer a gift that comes from a deep rugged place, something spiritual is transferred.
Jamie Vowles-Wang A major
Steve Berry Paradoxymoronical
A spontaneously composed set of ‘lucky dip’ improvisations are punctuated with three improvised interludes. The lucky dip is created by superimposing 3/4, 4/4 & 5/4, those time signatures then individually used for each interlude in turn.
