Alumni Archive Recordings, 1973-1994

Unlocking Your Sounds at the RNCM

The RNCM Archive includes an amazing array of recordings of nearly all our student and staff performances over the past five decades, right back to 1973, including recitals, large and small-scale ensemble performances, opera productions, and unique masterclasses with tutors and guest artists. This archive not only celebrates the RNCM’s story, but it also forms an important part of Manchester’s musical heritage.

However, many of these unique performances are stored on reels of magnetic tape which are steadily and irreversibly degrading. Without conservation, they will soon be lost forever.

During our 50th anniversary year, the National Lottery Heritage Fund generously awarded a major grant to the RNCM to save part of this important legacy. This project, Throwing Open the Concert Doors, will save 1,731 recordings which document the journeys of our alumni and staff as musicians, composers, educators, conductors and entrepreneurs; preserving them for students past, present and future, to cherish, enjoy and be inspired.

However, this funding only covers the digitisation of less than half the endangered reels in need of conservation. There are still thousands more that will be lost without your help.

We need your help to save as many recordings as possible. Every contribution, big or small, will play a part in preserving these hidden gems and ensuring that they can be enjoyed for many years to come.

You can view the list of reels, spanning 1973 – 1994, below.
