Keyboard deputy steps down with a smile

Staff and students gathered to wish Helen Krizos all the best as she stands down from the role as Deputy Head of School of Keyboard Studies this summer.

Referring to his love of statistics, Graham Scott, Head of School, offered some quirky (and rough) facts about Helen’s 14 years in post, including answering over 311,000 emails, hearing the audition sight-reading piece over 2100 times and, on a more serious note, organising over 400 pedagogy placements for RNCM students.

‘It was Helen’s hard work and commitment that led to the creation of the pedagogy programme that we have today and are very proud of,’  he said. ‘It has enabled many SKS students to achieve their ambition of becoming committed and inspirational teachers in schools and private teaching practice. Some have gone on to set up their own music schools.

‘I feel very lucky to have had Helen’s support over the past 11 years since becoming Head. She has always been there to bounce ideas off and to work through the ups and downs of running the School. She has always shown a caring attitude towards all the students and is always there to lend an ear. I’d like to say a big thank you on behalf of all the staff and students in SKS for all the work that you have done as the School’s Deputy and to wish you well in the next chapter of your musical life.’

In response, Helen said that she found the RNCM a truly ‘amazing and inspirational’ place to work with a ‘great sense of community’.

Professor Linda Merrick, Principal, said: ‘I would like to thank Helen on behalf of the RNCM for the outstanding contribution she has made to the leadership and management of the School of Keyboard Studies in her time as Deputy Head and am delighted that she will be remaining with us in a part-time capacity, continuing to provide inspirational individual teaching and pedagogy classes for our students.’

We announced recently that Ashley Wass would be taking up the position of Deputy Head in September as Helen continues to work with the School as a Tutor in Piano.
