Infrastructure projects – planned
Library Decarbonisation and Heat Network Project
This project aims to provide a low carbon solution to heating and air-conditioning (AC) in our Library Building which is due for refurbishment. The project will bring environmental benefits and an improved experience to building users. This will be achieved by extending the main building heat network to include the Library Building as well as bringing insulation and glazing up to modern, highly efficient standards.
Strategy
RNCM’s strategic aim for heating and ventilation is to decarbonise. The current scheme will extend the heat network of our Main Building, powered by an air source heat pump. The project will remove end of life gas boilers, air supply (AHU) and AC infrastructure. The refrigerant gas used in the AC is now out of compliance and we want to remove use of gas completely from this building.
RNCM already made significant progress in improving insulation in Phase 1 of its decarbonisation programme and the latest project will also improve insultation in roofs and by replacing old glazing with modern units.
We always challenge our contractors to adopt sustainable procurement and disposal methods to ensure that we minimise travel miles and impact on landfill.
Benefits
We will save 215 tonnes of carbon pa and over £100K pa on running costs. Users will have a more controlled environment and our pianos will enjoy a more stable environment.
Funding
The total budget for the project is £7.1m and will take place in phases between 2024 and 2026. This focus on mainly summer works means avoiding disruption to students.
