Sustainable and Active Travel

The RNCM is committed to promoting and encouraging sustainable travel for students, staff, and visitors to the building.

We work alongside local institutions and partners such as Oxford Road Corridor Sustainable Travel Group, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and the Bee Network to actively influence decision making around future sustainable travel infrastructure.  Manchester City Council encourage Active Travel in the city, and as part of the Manchester City Centre Transport Strategy, the Council have set a target of 90% of peak morning trips into the city centre to be made by foot, cycle, or public transport by 2040.

The RNCM building is close to three stations – Manchester Oxford Road (0.6 miles), Manchester Piccadilly (0.9 miles) and Manchester Victoria (1.6 miles). The nearest tram stops are St Peter’s Square (0.8 miles) and Deansgate (1 mile). The College is well connected by plenty of buses available on Oxford Road. Staff are entitled to a loan for season bus and tram tickets which enables them to spread the cost of travel and benefit from the potential savings associated with buying an annual season ticket.

We provide two sets of cycle shelters on campus for any visitors to the building, as well as showers available onsite for staff who cycle to work. Staff are also able to partake in a Cycle to Work scheme which saves on the cost of a new bicycle (and any associated safety equipment) by using Cycle to Work vouchers taken out of their salary before tax.

There are numerous EV charging points situated close to the RNCM building, the location of which can be found on ZapMap.

We encourage alternatives to national and international travel by utilising video conferencing technology when viewed as a suitable means of communication, and remote or blended working arrangements where appropriate to reduce carbon footprint resulting from commuting.
