RNCM announces new Master of Education

The RNCM has enhanced its postgraduate portfolio through the launch of a Master of Education (MEd).

Open for 2024 entry, this new degree is aimed at music teaching professionals who wish to gain further training and accreditation for their teaching and/or conducting practice. It is also ideal for musicians who have completed an undergraduate or postgraduate course at university or conservatoire and are now looking to specialise in education.

Full-time over one year or part-time over two, this highly specialised programme has music education at its core. Through timetabled and optional modules, flexible supervision, and placements, students will develop knowledge of relevant and current educational concepts to inform their own practice and learn how to creatively respond to the ever-changing developments in pedagogy and music education. They will also graduate with a clear understanding of how to promote healthy and holistic approaches to learning and teaching.

Robbie Gardiner, Programme Lead for Music Education, said: ‘Our new Master of Education degree is a really exciting and innovative programme that has been deliberately designed to support the varied and flexible professional lives of music educators, aiming to nurture and support teachers across all disciplines, musical styles, contexts and settings. It is rooted in our passion for developing inclusive approaches to music education and enriching the lives of everyone through music.’

Commencing in September, the Master of Education complements our current degree portfolio and enhances our overall offer in this area, with other programmes, including the Master of Music (MMus) and Master of Performance (MPerf), providing pathway options in music education and pedagogy. Our Bachelor of Music with Honours (BMus) also offers an educational strand for students wishing to develop skills in this area.
