RNCM appoints two Honorary Researchers in Association with PRiSM

We are excited to continue working with Dr Hongshuo Fan as RNCM Honorary Research Fellow and Professor David De Roure as RNCM Honorary Research Professor and Technical Director of PRiSM, 2025-2028.

These appointments are made in recognition of Professor De Roure and Dr Fan’s invaluable contribution to the RNCM through their work at PRiSM, the RNCM Centre for Practice & Research in Science & Music.

Professor David De Roure (L) and Dr Hongshuo Fan (R)

In 2019, the RNCM was awarded £914,000 from Research England’s Expanding Excellence in England Fund (E3) to establish PRiSM. Since then, both researchers have made significant contributions to the development of PRiSM’s flagship technological tools and teaching methods, helping to shape the Centre’s unique presence as a world-leading, conservatoire-based research unit for collaborative and interdisciplinary research.

Professor Emily Howard (Professor in Composition, Head of Artistic Research and Director of PRiSM) commented: ‘We are thrilled that David and Hongshuo are continuing their association with RNCM and PRiSM in these new roles. They are not only brilliant researchers but also generous and inspiring colleagues, whose contributions have been invaluable to our community. Their expertise and creativity have already had a profound impact on PRiSM’s research, and we look forward to many more exciting collaborations in the years ahead.’

Professor David De Roure and Dr Hongshuo Fan with PRiSM associated composers Zakiya Leeming, Megan Steinberg, Robert Laidlow, Emily Howard, Sam Salem, Bofan Ma, and Professor George Lewis (Columbia University and Chair of PRiSM International Advisory Board) at Roulette Intermedium, New York, after the world premiere PRiSM event with International Contemporary Ensemble and the official launch of ‘PRiSM AGR’ – PRiSM’s flagship Audio Gesture Recognition software toolkit developed by Dr Fan, May 2024.

Dr Hongshuo Fan (范弘硕) is a Chinese cross-disciplinary composer, new media artist, and creative programmer who holds a PhD in Electroacoustic Composition from the University of Manchester. He has extensive experience in creating real-time interactive multimedia content, such as acoustic instruments, live electronics, generative visuals, light, and body movements.

Professor David De Roure is Academic Director of Digital Scholarship in the Humanities Division of the University of Oxford, and Academic Director of the Laboratory for AI Security Research (LASR) in the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Division. He is Professor of e-Research in the Oxford e-Research Centre, and previously an Honorary Visiting Professor David De Roure is Academic Director of Digital Scholarship in the Humanities Division of the University of Oxford, and Academic Director of the Laboratory for AI Security Research (LASR) in the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Division. He is Professor of e-Research in the Oxford e-Research Centre, and previously an Honorary Visiting Professor at the RNCM. David has been the founding Technical Director of PRiSM since its launch in 2017.

David’s past research projects include The Theory and Practice of Social Machines (SOCIAM), Fusing Audio and Semantic Technologies (FAST), and Transforming Musicology. His interdisciplinary research has engaged closely and collaboratively with humanities (digital humanities, digital musicology, computational creativity), engineering (Internet of Things, cybersecurity, physical computing), social sciences (Social Machines, Web Science, citizen science), information science (knowledge infrastructure, computational archival science), and computer science (large scale distributed systems, AI). Since 2018 he has had roles assisting the development of the UKRI Research and Innovation Infrastructure, particularly in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

We are delighted to welcome David and Hongshuo to continue their collaboration with RNCM researchers, staff, and students in the next three years. We are excited to continue to learn from their vision and expertise, as we collectively explore an accessible, inclusive, and responsible AI.
