Vocal success at the National Eisteddfod

There have been brilliant results at this year’s National Eisteddfod for six recent vocal alumni.

Sarah Gilford (pictured below as Dorabella in RNCM Opera’s Così fan tutte) won the W Towyn Roberts Memorial Scholarship and second place in the over 25 soprano solo category; Ryan Davies was awarded second place in the under 25 tenor solo competition and the David Lloyd Prize for most promising tenor; Erin Rossington won the Violet Mary Jones Scholarship for most promising soprano; Emyr Jones took third place in the under 25 baritone solo competition and won the opera duet prize with soprano Rhiannon Ashley; and John Ieuan Jones won the baritone solo category and the Blue Riband Osborne Roberts Memorial Prize, and second place in the Lieder/Art Song prize.

The National Eisteddfod of Wales is the most important of several annual eisteddfodau (festivals). Its eight days of competitions and performances are considered the largest music and poetry festival in Europe, attracting approximately 6000 competitors and over 150,000 visitors.
