James works at the reception desk in the entrance foyer of the RNCM, acting as the first point of contact and the public face for the RNCM. His roles include: providing a warm welcome and assistance to all users of the RNCM; giving out information about the college; receiving and redirecting phone calls; and handling deliveries to the building.

James is a PhD researcher in Composition at the RNCM. He is also the co-founder and Director of Operations for Hive Sinfonia, an orchestra of graduates and students in the Manchester area. Between his life as a musician/theorist and his role as the face of the RNCM, James also teaches composition and violin to private students.

Current and Future Research

James Waide is a PhD candidate at the RNCM, assembling his research under the title “Composition, Punctuation, Substance; Raising Music in a Lacanian-Hegelian manner“. His recent output includes: “Organs without Bodies”, a piece of Orchestral music which was workshopped by the Hallé; “Punctuated”, a piece for mixed ensemble, performed by Hive Sinfonia; and a conference paper “Correlating Musical Subject and Dialectical Subject to Develop a Critical Approach to Ideology in Musical Analysis and Composition”.
