Karen Humphreys MBE

Karen Humphreys MBE

Name: Karen Humphreys MBE

Role:
Alumna and Head of Junior RNCM

About:
Karen’s association with the RNCM dates to 1978, when she arrived as an undergraduate cellist with dreams of joining the Hallé. Her performing ability was clear from the outset, but it was an unexpected love for academic studies that flourished most. Taking on some teaching responsibility in the senior college whilst still a student, Karen became involved in Junior RNCM in the mid-80s, deputising for Ida Carroll. A permanent role teaching theory and aural soon followed, and from there – with four years as our first International Officer and a two-year counselling course under her belt – she became Junior RNCM’s Assistant Administrator, working with Shirley Blakey. In April 1998, following Shirley’s retirement, Karen accepted the role of Head of Junior RNCM, and has been its nurturing and inspirational leader ever since.
