Kathryn Rudge

Name: Kathryn Rudge

Role: Mezzo-soprano and RNCM Associate Member

Key fact: Anyone who can recall her vibrant portrayal of Bizet’s Carmen or Barber’s Vanessa during her student days, will know that Kathryn was destined for great things. Since graduating with an International Artist Diploma in 2011, the Liverpool-born mezzo-soprano had secured Principal roles with English National Opera, Opera North and Glyndebourne on Tour, and been named The Times’ New Face of Classical Music. As someone who also studied at our Junior school, Kathryn remains a firm favourite within the RNCM family, and we take a lot of pride in knowing that the feeling’s mutual: ‘The RNCM is so special to me. It is the place I began discovering and developing music and singing whilst working towards a professional career. I’m a huge football fan – and just like it’s a great feeling to belong to a team, I feel the same way about my music…If I were to pick a team, a place to study, it would be the RNCM every time.’ It was a pleasure to welcome Kathryn back to the RNCM in December to perform a guest spot in our opera production Die Fledermaus as part of our 50th anniversary celebrations.

Did you know? Among many awards, Kathryn has won the Merseyside Women of the Year Arts and Culture Award, and was also a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist. She co-founded Mersey Wave Music, a community choir charity in South Liverpool, and is passionate about music in healthcare settings. Kathryn is a Patron of the Clatterbridge Cancer Charity.
