In Focus: Sally Beamish

Awarding-winning composer and alumna Sally Beamish joins us this October for an incredible celebration of her life and music.

Writing for a multitude of genres and never afraid of a challenge, Sally’s impressive and rising catalogue features over 200 compositions. Taking inspiration from a range of sources, with a particular focus on jazz and Scottish traditional music, her work embraces everything from solo and duo to chamber, orchestral, opera and ballet. Next year, her third full-length ballet, A Christmas Carol, will be premiered by Finnish National Ballet.

Sally began her music career as a violist, studying at the RNCM with Patrick Ireland, before moving to Scotland to take up composition during the 1990s. She’s performed with many leading ensembles, including the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields and London Sinfonietta, and was Principal Viola with the London Mozart Players and Scottish Chamber Orchestra. She continues to be a member of the string quintet Ensemble V and performs regularly as a violist, pianist, and narrator.

We’re delighted to welcome Sally back to the College for this exciting In Focus festival.
