Manus Carey appointed Deputy Principal (Performance and Programmes)

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Manus Carey to the new role of Deputy Principal (Performance and Programmes), commencing 1 May 2019.

Manus joined the RNCM in September 2017 as Director of Performance, bringing extensive experience from his previous role as Executive Producer at the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO), where he was responsible for the Orchestra’s artistic strategy and programme, as well as its recording, commissioning, hired engagements and national/international touring work.

During his time as Director of Performance, Manus has presided over a number of significant innovations in student performance, including extended side-by-side working with professional partners, an annual themed approach to programming, aligning a broader range of learning opportunities with the performance programme and, more recently, instigating Lab Week, an initiative that provides students with the chance to step out of the practice room, collaborate together and create something new.

‘The RNCM is such an extraordinarily creative, inspiring and forward-thinking environment and I am completely delighted to be extending my role here, to further contribute to the development of the musicians, as well as the music industry, of the future.’ Manus Carey

As Deputy Principal (Performance and Programmes), Manus will assume strategic leadership and over-arching responsibility for the College’s academic programmes as well as performance activities, aligning the RNCM’s performance programme with the academic training needs of students.  He will also have over-arching responsibility for Access and Participation, ensuring the College reaches out across the wider community to support people of all ages and backgrounds, help develop the next generation of talented young musicians who might aspire to study at the conservatoire, and equip students with the wide portfolio of education and workshop leadership skills they need for success in tomorrow’s music industry.

‘I am thrilled that Manus has accepted this new and important role at the College. His wealth of experience, together with the dedication and commitment he has already shown to our staff and students provides the perfect foundation to ensure that the RNCM remains at the forefront of music education regionally, nationally and internationally.’ Professor Linda Merrick, Principal

Manus will now work in parallel with Susan Baines, whose role will be re-designated from Vice-Principal (Operations) to Deputy Principal (Operations) from 1 May 2019. Together they will drive forward the College’s ambitious strategic plans, leading its academic and professional service teams.

This change of structure follows the retirement of Professor Martin Harlow as Vice-Principal (Academic) this term. Martin joined the College as Head of Undergraduate Studies in 2001, becoming Dean of Academic Studies in 2009, Director of Studies in 2013 and Vice-Principal (Academic) the following year. The RNCM will shortly be advertising for a Director of Programmes to lead the development of its innovative portfolio of taught degree programmes.
