Expressions of art nouveau and impressions of nature and night, press play on Debussy’s Preludes, and you’ll be sure to conjure up rich and vivid images. Join our students from the School of Keyboard Studies as they bring these evocative pieces to life.

Piano preludes were not a new form to Debussy. There were already many great examples published such as those by Bach and Chopin before Debussy himself took to the task. He set out to create descriptive vignettes, filled with lush imagery and expressive indulgence.

There are 24 preludes in total divided into two books of 12, with each piece only lasting a few minutes. Encouraging the performer to immerse themselves in the sound world first, Debussy only printed each work’s title at the end of the piece.
