As Buoso Donati lies dead, his relatives gather round to mourn his passing – although they are really only interested in discovering the contents of his will. Betto mentions a rumour he has heard that Buoso has left everything to a monastery; this disturbs the others and leads to a frantic search for the will. The document is found by Rinuccio, who asks his aunt Zita to allow him to marry Lauretta, daughter of Gianni Schicchi.  As they read, their worst fears are realised; Buoso has indeed bequeathed his fortune to the friars.

Lucilla has spent all Giocondo’s money on jewellery and clothes, and so there is not a dowry for Angelica to wed Valerio. We are at the end of the opera when the various strands of the story reach a resolution, helped by Ferramondo’s friend Dorval, and his servants Marina and Castagna. Ferramondo agrees to pay Angelica’s dowry, and all ends happily.
