Black Dyke Band

Our Professional Experience Scheme with the Black Dyke Band is designed to give brass and percussion students first-hand experience playing as part of a world-renowned brass band.

This scheme is an enhancement of the long-standing partnership between Black Dyke and the RNCM, launching for the first time in 2019-20.

The scheme involves mentorship from players and conductors of Black Dyke, and provides students with experience of rehearsing and performing as part of a brass band. Everyone associated with Black Dyke Band is fully aware that they represent a truly unique musical organisation – one that has a proud heritage that spans over 160 years of remarkable achievement.

Following auditions at the RNCM, selected students will be invited to join the band as a full member. With guidance from established Black Dyke players, students will work with the band in all of their commitments, rehearsing and performing up and down the country, and working at educational and open day events. There are also chances for students to have training in brass band conducting.

With many opportunities to receive feedback and direction from other players, this is a unique opportunity to be fully immersed in the brass band world, and as well as providing educational benefits also gives students involved the chance to meet and work with a great range of people throughout the year.

Successful students will be awarded a £1000 bursary from Black Dyke, to cover expenses incurred.
