Call for PRiSM Scientists and Writer in Residence

PRiSM, the RNCM Centre for Practice & Research in Science & Music, is seeking to appoint two visiting Scientists and a visiting Writer for a 12-month residency period to begin in January 2021.
Applications for the PRiSM Scientists in Residence are invited from, but not limited to, the following research areas:
- Sustainability / Environmental Sciences
- Computer Science / Cognitive Science / Psychology, for example, related to Human-AI Interaction
- Mathematics / Theoretical Physics
- Robotics
Applications for the PRiSM Writer in Residence are invited from authors of both fiction and non-fiction, including poets, journalists and philosophers.
Each of the successful applicants will be required to undertake:
- An original research project, designed to engage with PRiSM’s areas of interest and activity
- A written contribution to the PRiSM Blog, reflecting on their research project and the process of collaborating with PRiSM
- Ongoing engagement with PRiSM staff and students throughout the project
- A final presentation (format to be confirmed)
Each successful applicant will receive a fee of £6,000 in order to deliver their proposed projects. This figure is all inclusive, and should include material costs, as well as travel and accommodation costs for any scheduled visits to the RNCM.
Applicants should provide:
- a covering letter, including a description of how your research area engages specifically with PRiSM’s areas of interest and activity,
- a full CV, including a list of publications,
- an outline / proposal of your intended research project, with a timeline for completion

FAQ
- There is no expectation you would reside in Manchester, however we would expect you to be in regular communication with the team (we are all working remotely at the moment) and if circumstances allow, we would like to be able to schedule some in person collaborative working meetings, depending of course on the nature of the proposal.
- We are currently working in the area of Artificial Intelligence and composition and welcome proposals in this area but it doesn’t have to be a feature. Or perhaps you have less experience in this area but have a proposal that would explore an interesting idea that we can help you to realise? You might realise a project using another type of technology, for example Visual or Augmented Reality. Or perhaps you want to explore an interdisciplinary idea in a completely different way?
- The PRiSM Blog, Event and Collaboration pages describe the sort of interdisciplinary projects we have been doing to date, to help give applicants an idea, but the brief is deliberately open, we are keen to receive new and exciting proposals. Surprise us!
