Practice based PhD: Counterpoint in jazz piano with specific relation to the solo work of Fred Hersch

Bruno is exploring the history and development of counterpoint in jazz piano playing. He then intends to address the question: ‘what is unique about the contrapuntal solo playing of New York based pianist Fred Hersch?

In the practical element of his studies, his primary aim is to develop the technique of contrapuntal improvisation in his own playing. This will involve sessions with Fred in NYC, recording an album of my compositions as well as performances.
